a Statistical Report about Low Vision and Blindness




Abstract
The authors performed retrospectively the statistical study on 8812 out-patients who visited to Department of Ophthalmology, Pil-dong Hospital, Chung-Ang University from June 1991 to December 1991.
The site and the primary cause of the visual impairment were studied.
Low vision was defined as visual acuity 0.3 or less with best correction. Standard classification of causes of low vision including blindness recommended from the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness is applied.
@ES The results are as follows:
@EN 1) 270 persons (3.1%) have low visions or blindness.
2) total 345 eyes have visual impairment, among them 75 persons(28%) have binocular low visions or blindness, an 195 persons(72%) monocular.
3) male is affected in 199 persons(44%), and female in 151 persons(56%).
4) Age distribution in low vision or blindness is as follows(total 270 persons): in male : under 10 (6 persons, 2.2%). 11~20 (9 persons, 3.3%), 20~30 (13 persons, 4.8%), 31~40 (20 persons, 7.4%), 41~50 (13 persons, 4.8%), 50~60(18 persons,

61~70
(28 persons, 10.4%), over 71(12 persons, 4.4%)
in female : under 10 (11 persons, 4.1%), 11~12 (7 persons, 2.6%), 21~30(13 persons, 4.8%), 31~40 (20 persons, 7.4%), 41~50(18 persons, 6.7%), 50~60(27 persons, 10.0%), 61~70(37 persons, 13.7%), over 71(36 persons, 13.3%)
5) The causes of visual impairment in order are as follow (total 345 eyes) : senile cataract (95 eyes, 27.3%), unknown etiology (83 eyes 24.1%), trauma (53 eyes. 15.2%), systemic disease (32 eyes, 9.3%), glaucoma (26 eyes, 7.5%), etc.
6) The sites of visual impairment in order are as follows(total 345 eyes): chorioretinal disease (115 eyes, 33.3%), lens disease (109 eyes, 31.6%), corneal disease (36 eyes, 10.4%), optic nerve disease (19 eyes, 5.5%), refractive errors
